Therapy for Panic and Anxiety Attacks

Your World Has Been Shrinking One Place at a Time

The freeway went first.

Then the grocery store.

Some days even the mailbox waits until dark.

Concerts are done.

A trip on a plane? Out of the question.

Nobody sat you down and asked you to give any of that up.

An attack lasts minutes.

The avoiding lasts all week.

This didn't used to be a thing.

Life used to be easy.

You went anywhere and everywhere without a thought.

Now the only thought is whether the anxiety will start again … and how you can avoid it.

And you're the only one holding the map.

You Can Still Name the Day It Started

You remember exactly where you were standing.

You remember thinking it was your heart.

Then somebody told you it was panic.

Huh?

You'd been anxious plenty of times before.

The weeks around that first one were stressful, sure.

Never like that, though.

And now the next one feels like it's right around the corner.

Something must have happened to change your life this drastically. Right?

The real answer is smaller than that.

It's the reason this can come undone.

Your Medication Works. Kind Of.

It keeps you off the edge most of the time.

You never miss the dose at night.

And the bottle doesn't leave your purse, either, just in case.

Catch it early enough and sometimes you can head one off.

What it can't do is make any of this go away.

Lately you're not even sure it works like it used to.

You're ready for that cure.

Train Your System Out of the Habit

Did you know panic is a habit?

Biting your nails is a habit you choose.

This one got trained into the automatic part of your system.

Nobody asked your permission first.

That's good news!

Whatever got trained in can be trained back out.

If you know what to do.

Your Anxiety Attacks Can Be FIXED

First comes real relaxation, the deep kind nobody ever taught you.

Then self-talk that carries you through an attack while it's happening, and shortens it.

Then better self-talk still, the kind that shuts an attack down before it starts.

Then you go take your territory back.

And, snap, the habit breaks.

The freeway, because it's the faster way home.

The mailbox in daylight, no negotiation.

A crowded store on a Saturday.

The plane, eventually.

One of these days you'll buy a concert ticket without counting the exits.

The bottle in your purse stops setting the terms of your day.

Whatever happens with the medication after that belongs to you and your doctor.

For panic that showed up recently, with nothing deeper underneath it, a few months can do it, if things go well.
