Individual Therapy

Give Your Feelings an Order and Watch What Happens

"Calm down." You've said it to yourself a thousand times. The knot in your stomach heard you. It stayed right where it was.

"Stop thinking about it." The thought took that as an invitation and came back louder.

"No more checking the mirror today." Ten minutes later, there you are, checking. Same deal with the fridge, the ritual you can't skip, the mood that won't lift.

Ever notice who wins these arguments?

"This is controlling me." Somewhere in there, you decided the problem must be you.

Find Out Who's Really Giving the Orders

Racing thoughts!

Racing heart!

Those are the automatic parts of you. Your feelings are behind the wheel. Anxiety drives the panic attacks. Shame drives the preoccupation with how your body looks.

Good thing you have parts that DO take direction.

Use What You Can Control to Change What You Can't

My philosophy is pretty straightforward.

I help you use what you can control about yourself to transform what you can't control about yourself.

Your mind and your body are the parts you can steer. Calm the anxious mind and the anxious body, and the anxious emotions settle, allowing your happy to fill the space.

That, broadly, is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Three methods I use most:

Cognitive therapy: noticing a thought, checking whether it's true, swapping in one that helps.

Exposure with response prevention (ERP): facing what you've avoided in small, planned steps.

Compassion-focused therapy (CFT): loosening the hold shame has on you.

So is the goal a life of discipline and logic? That's no way to live!

How Much ‘Happy’ Do You Have to Fill the Space?

People are storytellers. It's what we do.

Sometimes, the story you tell of your past is a sad one, built from sad things that really happened. That story narrows what seems possible, now and later.

Narrative therapy lays that story out where we can both see it.

Once you see exactly how you're more than your sad stories (or your anxious ones, or your shameful ones!), your unique happy frees up.

Schema therapy works one layer down.

Your automatic thoughts and behaviors grow out of something deeper and emotionally loaded you built inside yourself.

Say you expect people at a party to react badly to how you look. That expectation shapes how you act the moment you walk in.

Explore those schemas, and they lose their power to take over under stress. Work with them in the room, and they can change altogether.

Go Only as Deep as You Need to Go

Flexible thinking, a calmer demeanor, a richer emotional life… that's the potential therapy offers.

You only need go as deep as you need to go to clean up what is keeping you from this.

Picture telling yourself to calm down …

… and knowing how to make that happen.
